Packwood ‘Can’t Remember’ Accusers, Still Apologizes
Sen. Bob Packwood, accused by 19 women of unwanted sexual advances, said Wednesday that he “can’t remember” most of his accusers, but he apologized to them nonetheless.
“One of these charges is 21 years old, one of them is a quarter-of-a-century old,” the Oregon Republican said of the complaints pending before the Senate ethics committee.
The panel reported in May that it found “substantial credible evidence” that Packwood made unwanted sexual advances toward 17 women in 18 instances between 1969 and 1990. Last week, the committee disclosed that it had received two additional complaints - one from a woman who said she was 17 when Packwood grabbed and kissed her in 1983.
“Most of them are people I can’t remember. I’ve apologized to the ones I can’t remember, and I’ve apologized for the incidents I can’t recall, and I apologize again,” Packwood said on CNN’s “Larry King Live.”
He also emphatically denied rumors that he might resign.
“I have no intention of resigning now; not tomorrow, not next week, not next month, not next year,” he said.
