Cambodia Detains Six Protesters
The government has detained six protesters for trying to spread anti-government messages during the recent visit of U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher, police said Saturday.
The six were arrested and detained on Aug. 4 when they tried to float balloons to which leaflets criticizing the Cambodian government were tied. The leaflets accused the government of corruption, human rights abuses and robbing “the people’s land and rice fields.”
A preliminary court hearing Friday ruled that they would remain in jail pending further investigation, which could take up to six months.
