Man In Car Awakened, Arrested

A man found sleeping in a stolen Triumph “Spitfire” was arrested in north Spokane on Thursday.

James Hilby, 45, who gave his address as 4904 North Julia, was booked into the Spokane County Jail for firstdegree possession of stolen property.

Police said Hilby had parked the small sports car on North Columbus and fell asleep in the front seat with the headlights on.

He shared the seat with a mountain bike, police said.

Hilby told officers he had just purchased the green 1978 Spitfire, but police noticed there were wires loose beneath the dashboard and that there was no key in the ignition.

A check of the car’s registration revealed it had been stolen Wednesday.
