23 Injured In Brawl Between Rival Cabbies

Compiled From Wire Services

Hundreds of rival taxi drivers attacked each other with rocks, firebombs and clubs over a traffic dispute in the Taiwanese capital.

At least 23 people were injured and 110 cabs were damaged, police said. State radio said seven of the injured were in serious condition.

The rioting began Wednesday night when drivers of two fiercely competitive taxi associations got into a fight. The drivers summoned help over their radios, and the fighting flared all day.

The cab companies reached a truce Friday. But drivers who gathered at the offices of their taxi associations were armed with clubs, and police erected barbed wire nearby to ward off more violence.
