Man Tried, Convicted, Jailed, But Not Charged
George Lewis Corrado stood trial for attempting to murder his girlfriend. A jury took two days to convict him. He was then sent off to begin serving a 10-year prison term.
Only later did an attorney discover something very strange about the Corrado case.
The Pierce County prosecutor’s office had forgotten to charge Corrado.
The 38-year-old Tacoma man has spent the past 18 months in prison even though he was convicted of a crime for which he was not formally charged.
Prosecutors said Corrado had initially been charged with the attempted murder of his girlfriend, but the charge was dropped when the victim could not be located.
When the girlfriend was found and agreed to testify, Corrado was rearrested. Prosecutors simply forgot to refile the charge when he was later brought to trial.
But Corrado’s lawyer will be in court today to ask that his client be freed.
