By Working As One, We’ll Reach Our Goal

Sue Hille

Isolation and ignorance incubate child abuse.

I know, nesting is so inviting when the day’s problems leave us exhausted. We deserve to rest, to veg out with a video, to put aside the needs of others.

From some deep well of community concern, we must draw the energy to connect with neighbors. We must overlook petty differences, forgive grievances and band together in the quest for accurate information and positive action. From the wealth of resources available we must become educated, and constructively apply our knowledge to form neighborhood networks.

A mobilized neighborhood can protect itself against a variety of crimes. A supported family is less likely to be abusive. Children are safer when protected by neighbors as an extension of family.

Community outreach involves risk, and risk involves fear. It must be courageously overcome through education, unity and action.

Now is the time for courage and commitment. One person, one family, can be the light in a cave, drawing the neighborhood into its brightness.

What are we willing to contribute so children can grow in safety, security and peace? All we’re really asked to give is a little time and energy, perhaps some personal discomfort. What is the challenge? It is a commitment of informed involvement and united action.

The obstacle is complacency.
