Julianne Connell, Paul Komarek and William Martin Dirks, all of Spokane, will return for a second year as Mathematics Fellows at Western Washington University’s Mathematics Center, Bellingham.
Donnie LeBret, Wellpinit High School, has been named a U.S. National Award winner in football. He is the son of Barb and Jack LeBret, Wellpinit, Wash. He was nominated by his coach, Jerry Hombel.
Lee Bowden, of Spokane Lodge No. 228, has been elected treasurer of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks at the group’s national convention in New Orleans.
Sarah Stucky and Missy Longshore, Gonzaga Prep debaters, placed fifth in cross examination at the National Debate Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
They earned 12 consecutive wins before losing to teams from Kansas and Nebraska.
Stucky also received a Phillips 66 Performance Award for earning the third-highest number of points at the tournament. She is the daughter of Dr. Craig and Mary Stucky, Spokane. Longshore is the daughter of Myrl Longshore, Spokane.
Other students who placed among the top 60 competitors at nationals were: John Voight and Joe Cutler, cross examination debate, and John Osebold, Jesse Driscoll and Joe Cutler, individual events, all of Mead High School; and Sara Thompkins and Phil Koestner in individual events, both Central Valley High School students.
