Promotions Received By Local Military Persons

Two Inland Northwest residents were recently promoted to their present military ranks:

Scott Larson, son of Donald Larson, Othello, Wash., and Connie Larson, Pasco, was made an ensign upon graduation from Officer Candidate School, Naval Aviation Schools Command, Pensacola, Fla. He is a 1989 graduate of Othello High School, and a 1993 graduate of Washington State University.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Todd Noe, son of Gerald and Robyn Noe, Spokane, received his rank while serving with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 40, Port Hueneme, Calif. He is a 1990 graduate of Mead High School.

The Eastern Washington University Press has been ranked in the nation’s top 10 literary university presses by the 1994 Dictionary of Literary Biography Yearbook. The EWU Press began actively publishing new titles again two years ago. A literary press is one which publishes poetry, fiction, criticism and scholarship works.

Mercedes Rose Calkins, 4, Spokane, daughter of Amy Sue Calkins and Mark Rancourt, recently competed as a state finalist in the Miss Washington American Princess Pageant in Seattle.

Michelle Anderson completed an internship with Senate majority leader Marcus Gaspard during the 1994 state legislature and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science this summer from Washington State University. She will continue to work towards a degree in speech communication after completion of an internship in the WSU-Vancouver communication office. She is a 1991 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Shellee Grim was awarded a $500 scholarship for the 1995-96 school year from the Supreme Guardian Council of the International Order of Job’s Daughters, a citizenship and character-building youth organization. She is a 1995 graduate of Ferris High School and the daughter of Sue Grim and Don Grim, Spokane. She plans to attend Washington State University and major in pharmacology.

Connie Nelson and Marilyn Yonkie, Inland Power & Light member accounts representatives, have been named Employees of the Quarter by the Spokane-based electric cooperative. Nelson has been an employee since 1987; Yonkie since 1985.

Senior Airman Jesse Goerz, 23, from Spokane, has been named one of 12 Outstanding Airmen of 1995.

The Air Force’s “Golden Dozen” gathered in Washington, D.C., last month and toured the Pentagon, Capitol and White House. He is a para-rescueman assigned to the 56th Rescue Squadron at Keflavik Naval Air Station, Iceland.

He helped save six Icelandic sailors as the primary para-rescueman on an over-water mission during hurricane-force winds, heavy snow and severe icing.

His efforts made him one of the first Americans to receive the heroism award of the National Lifesaving Association of Iceland.

Goerz was the 1994 Airman of the Year for the 85th Wing at Keflavik.
