‘Western Front’ Brings $425,800 At Auction
A handwritten manuscript of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” one of the great anti-war novels, sold at auction Friday for $425,800.
The manuscript of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1928 novel about World War I includes passages that do not appear in the published version, auctioneers at Sotheby’s said.
The manuscript was bought by three German organizations and will be loaned to the museum in Osnabrueck, Remarque’s home town. The seller was not identified.
“The existence of this text was unsuspected until very recently,” said Susan Wharton, Sotheby’s expert in Continental manuscripts.
Because of its anti-war stance, the Nazis burned the book publicly in 1933.
