Ewu Rotc Cadets Receive Honors At Camp

Eight cadets in the ROTC program at Eastern Washington University received the highest average leadership scores during last summer’s ROTC Advanced Camp. The nation’s ROTC programs operate two advanced camps in the summer - at Fort Lewis near Tacoma and at Fort Bragg at Fayetteville, N.C.

EWU students received the highest average leadership scores of the more than 4,000 cadets at either camp.

The cadets are: Kermit Brown, Jason Archibald, Robert Richardson, Kathleen Lecoq-Cannon, Derek Bowls, Kurt Harsh, Jeff Jedynak and Barry Ruppelius.

Deric Schmierer was selected to play trumpet in the 1995 National Future Farmers of America Band. The 100-plus-member marching and concert band performed at various events throughout the 68th National FFA Convention Nov. 9-11 in Kansas City, Mo. He is the son of Gary and Terri Schmierer, Odessa, Wash., and is a freshman at Washington State University.

Denel Ingraham, a Lutheran Brotherhood district representative from Spokane, earned the Special President’s Award from the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors. He is associated with the Peter Mauritsen Agency of Spokane.

Timothy Pierce has been accepted as a cadet at the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs. He will be a member of the 1999 graduating class. Pierce is the son of Charles and Donna Pierce, Spokane, and is a 1994 graduate of University High School.

Dan Hutchinson, director of the House of Charity, was awarded the Bishop’s Medal at the 10th annual Poor Man’s Meal in October.

The Bishop’s Medal is given in recognition of long and outstanding service to the Catholic Diocese of Spokane, particularly to those working with the poor and marginalized.

Hutchinson will retire Dec. 15 after 17 years with the diocese.

Mae Schaeffer, Spokane, received an Editor’s Choice Award for outstanding achievements in poetry from the National Library of Poetry for her poem, “When I Am an Old Woman.” It was published in the book “Between the Raindrops.”

Kim Eng, a recent graduate of Pacific University College of Optometry, and a Spokane resident, received the Vistakon Award of Excellence in Contact Lens Patient Care from Vistakon, a Division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Products Inc.

Eng received a $1,000 check and a commemorative plaque.

Bob Robertson, “Voice of the Cougars,” has been named the Washington State Association of Broadcasters’ 1995 Broadcaster of the Year.

Robertson’s career spans nearly 50 years and “exemplifies the commitment to the industry and community” that the award symbolizes.

He received the award at the association’s annual conference in October.

Dr. Betty Adams has been honored by the Pacific Coast College Health Association with its Ruby Rich Burger Award for contributions and service to Washington State University students.

Adams began her career as a doctor with the WSU student health service in 1957 and continues there as a staff physician.

Army Pfc. Steven M. Alva, son of Cheryle Alva of Spokane and Frank Alva of Clarkston, Wash.,

has received the Humanitarian Service Medal. The medal is awarded to military members who have provided assistance in a national or international disaster.

Alva, a combat engineer at Fort Hood, Texas, is a 1991 graduate of Kamiah (Idaho) High School.
