New Officers Elected By Girl Scouts Board

Elaine Linscott was recently elected president of the Girl Scouts Inland Empire Council’s board of directors.

Other newly elected officers are Cindy McMullen, first vice president; June Sine, second vice president; Curt Fackler, third vice president; Barbara Smith, fourth vice president; Linda Tickey, secretary; and Julie Taylor, treasurer.

Members at large are: Beverly Hawker, Judy Lattish, Mark Newbold, Allen Battle, Michelle Viau, Dave Thorn, Leslie Maxfield, Sharon Stern, Connie Bacon, Elena Conway, Shallon Petrelli, and Jessica Bane-Larsen. Petrelli and Bane-Larsen are Senior Girl Scouts.

The nominating committee is Betsy Blake, Judy Latish, Trish Nonaka and Allen Battle.

National convention delegates are Linscott and Jayn Courchaine. Alternate delegates are Sine and Nancy Roe.

Gonzaga University’s ROTC Varsity Ranger Challenge team placed first at the Tomahawk Brigade competition at Fort Lewis, Wash., in October. It’s the highest level of competition to be held this year.

The team competed against the best six teams from the brigade area of seven states and several U.S. territories. This is the second time in the past four years Gonzaga has captured first place in the annual competition.

Cadets competed in rifle marksmanship, orienteering and the 10K forced road march. GU placed first in five of eight events.

Team members are Bo Pitman (captain), Michael Eaton, Matthew Shea, R.J. Stephens, Jay Thoman, Matt Crotty, Aaron Wolfe, Ben Johnson, Karst Brandsma and Jon Sullivan. Sgt. 1st Class Claude Hansard is the coach.

Colleen Matlen, a 1992 graduate of St. George’s School, participated in student-faculty summer research for Bates College, Lewiston, Maine. She helped collect samples of carbon cyclings off the coast of Charleston, S.C.

Paul Kuntz a Gonzaga University graduate student, and Juan Bala Jr., associate electrical engineering professor and Kuntz’s faculty adviser, recently won first place in the Student Paper Competition at the 27th North American Power Symposium in Bozeman, Mont.

Kuntz’s paper, “Optimal Capacitor Allocation on a Radial Distribution Feeder,” is based on their research to reduce electric power and energy losses on a distribution feeder while minimizing the cost of installed capacitors.

Gina Freuen, a Spokane craft artist, was selected as a finalist for a national NICHE Award for her “Quadruped Teapot” in the category of Ceramics: Production, Functional.

Freuen competed among more than 850 entrants.

Winners will be announced in February.

Ensign Frank Wirtz, son of Kenneth and Rita Wirtz, Spokane, was recently commissioned to his present rank. He will serve at the Naval Aviation Schools Command, Pensacola, Fla. He is a 1989 graduate of Rogers High School and the University of Washington.
