Cv’s Shuh Silences Cda With 32 Points

GSL/FL boys

Corby Shuh gave new meaning to the term single-handedly Tuesday.

The 6-foot-3 Central Valley High School guard shot the Bears back into their non-league game against Coeur d’Alene. And it ultimately proved fatal to the Vikings, who lost their shooting touch in the second half.

The left-handed Shuh scored 22 of his game-high 32 points in the second half - and accounted for the Bears’ 17 points in the pivotal third quarter - as CV rallied for a 68-62 win at Viking Gym.

“He just went crazy on us (in the third quarter),” Vik coach Larry Bieber said.

Shuh, who went off for 36 points in CV’s season-opening win over Richland Friday, made 5 of 6 3-pointers in the third quarter, 7 of 9 for the game. He was more accurate behind the 3-point arc as he made just 2 of 6 from two-point range.

“We knew coming in (Shuh) was pretty good,” said Bieber, whose team dropped to 1-1. “We were closing out hard on him, but he still went over the top of our kids. He’s a tremendous shooter, one of the best I’ve seen.”

The hot-shooting start is rather new to Shuh, who averaged 12.6 points per game last season. He said he’s just taking advantage of more opportunities in a new offense.

“This year we’ve got more motion (in the offense) and I’m getting more screens,” Shuh said.

CdA, which played as well in stretches as it has at any time the past two seasons, caught CV by surprise early with a halfcourt trap. The Viks turned Bears mistakes into quick transition offense.

Vik sophomore post Luke O’Dowd’s uncontested turnaround jumper in the key put CdA ahead 16-2 with 4:28 left in the first quarter.

CV fought back within five by the end of the first quarter (23-18), and that margin remained at halftime (38-33).

The Bears didn’t catch the Viks until Shuh hit the third of his five 3-pointers in the third quarter. The trey tied the score at 42-all at the 2:18 mark, and 29 seconds later another Shuh 3-pointer gave CV its first lead at 45-44.

Shuh’s final 3 of the period with :23 remaining gave CV the lead for good at 50-48.

CdA’s offense stalled in the second half as the Bears’ matchup zone slowed down O’Dowd, who scored 17 points in the first half and finished with 24 and 10 rebounds.

“We still haven’t got that outside threat.” Bieber said. “That hurt us. But I think we’re going to get it.”
