Gymnastics Powers Collide At Mead Match

Mike Vlahovich Staff Writer

Greater Spokane League wrestling and gymnastics will begin in a big way tonight.

Three of last year’s top four gymnastics teams, including defending champion University and runnerup Central Valley are at Mead for a match that begins at 7 p.m.

It will be the first competition of the season for high school gymnasts.

The Titan wrestlers will be home at the same time against Rogers, one of five teams considered contenders for this year’s GSL title.

During last weekend’s Deer Park Invitational, University was the second-highest scoring GSL team there, finishing fourth behind meet winner Gonzaga Prep.

The Titans won a pair of championships with Andy Roberts winning 1-0 for the 129-pound title and Gordon Bash winning 11-10 at 101.

Other Valley champions were East Valley’s Justin Walker, who beat returning AAA state runnerup Jon Rugan of Mead 6-5 at 115, and Matt Eastman who won 10-7 at 135.

Quinn Sharpe of West Valley won handily 12-5 for the 108-pound title.

U-Hi’s Josh Knowles at 122 and WV’s Jason Miller at 178 placed second.

I.E. Wrestling Classic at CV

Central Valley hosts the Inland Empire Wrestling Classic this weekend. Friday’s action begins at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday’s at 8:30 a.m.

Fifteen schools, including six from the GSL, four from the Big Nine (including defending State AAA champion Moses Lake), and East Valley and West Valley of the Frontier League will be there.

Cost for all sessions is $6 per adult and $3 for students. Individual sessions cost $3 and $2 Friday, $4 and $2 for Saturday morning and $2 and $1 for the finals.

EV newcomer opens eyes

Newcomer James Spotted Horse opened eyes with his play for East Valley during last weekend’s seasonal basketball openers.

The transfer athlete had 22 points, eight rebounds and five steals as the Knights came within a point of Rogers in their second game of the season.

EV had 28 second-quarter points and took a 43-36 halftime lead before Rogers, which qualified for the AAA regionals last year, snuck back into the game at the foul line.

The night before, EV lost 60-53 in Post Falls after leading by six points. Kyle LeGrant and Donny Snyder scored 32 and 29 points respectively during the weekend.

Corby Schuh scored an incredible 68 points in two games, Central Valley beating Richland in overtime and Coeur d’Alene Tuesday. University also won twice, in Moses Lake and Post Falls, Kelly Hineman with 22 points in the former, Erik Carlson with 26 for the pair.

Freeman made it three in a row over Class B schools, beating Garfield-Palouse and SpragueHarrington. Garen Friberg was in double figures both games.

Good start for Valley girls pair

Two Valley girls basketball teams bombarded their initial foes of the new season.

Central Valley whipped Richland 75-42, with Crystal Lee scoring 21 points and Marcy MacPhee 11.

West Valley whipped Deer Park 65-35 with Keisha Sowers scoring 20 points and Shelly Shollenberger 16.

University split in Bellevue and Issaquah, losing the latter by a point in overtime after rallying from nine down in the fourth quarter.

Three different players scored in double figures once each, Adrienne Wilson, Syd Perno and Emily Stuenkel.

East Valley lost twice, 55-43 to unbeaten Post Falls and 58-53 to Rogers. Angela Overdorff scored 35 points in the two games and Star Olson had 26.
