Charles Argersinger Wins First In Composition Contest

Charles Argersinger, professor of music and theater arts at Washington State University, received first prize in a national composition competition sponsored by the Tampa, Fla., chapter of the United Nations Association and the Tampa Bay Composers’ Forum.

Argersinger’s “Miniatures for Brass Quartet” was judged as “a piece highlighting modern harmony … bright and brassy.”

Two performances of “Miniatures” were held in St. Petersburg, Fla., and will be available for other United Nations Association events throughout the year. His works have been performed by various ensembles around the country.

Argersinger is coordinator of composition and theory for WSU’s New Music Festival.

Students of The Tessa Williams School of Classical Ballet recently took the American Academy Awards Test, the first time it has been administered in Spokane.

A total of 18 Silver and 20 Bronze medals were awarded. The top winners were:

Aaron Grant, Gold Medal with Distinction.

Prasti Vinje, Wendy Palmer and Lindsey Witter, all received Silver Medals with Distinction.

Performance awards are a new concept in ballet, rewarding each student with a certificate and a medal, ranging from Bronze to Gold with Distinction.

Thomas Duryea, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Duryea, Spokane, received a Special Act Award from the Defense Mapping Agency in St. Louis, Mo., for special actions that contributed significantly to agency operations. Duryea lives in Florissant, Mo.

John Oliphant, Spokane, was named Explorer of the Year by the Washington Law Enforcement Exploring Advisers. His adviser is Officer Bob Walker of the Spokane Police Department.

Oliphant is the son of Kathie Mullennix.

Dan St. John, Spokane, received the Recognition Award as Outstanding Volunteer with the Washington Special Olympics.

The award is given to those whose volunteer actions significantly improve the quality of Washington Special Olympics in any aspect, who displays a positive attitude toward the state organization and who serve as an example for other volunteers.

The Washington Special Olympics also named Shopko Stores as the Outstanding Business/ Corporation.

Shopko made a major, statewide contribution to Special Olympics this year, raising thousands of dollars. In addition, Shopko employees served as volunteers for several events.

The award acknowledges the best example of business or corporate support which enhances the Washington Special Olympics program.
