Gonzaga Thrashes Fullerton
WCC
After a poor performance in Thursday night’s loss to Montana State, Gonzaga basketball coach Dan Fitzgerald decided his Bulldogs needed a spark.
What they got, in the form of a stern Fitzgerald lecture, carried the energy of a volcanic eruption.
“They got a good old-fashioned (rear) chewing,” Fitzgerald said Saturday night, shortly after Gonzaga stormed into Fullerton, Calif., and took out its frustrations in an 83-57 non-conference men’s basketball shellacking of Cal State Fullerton.
“I told them that a competitor has a choice,” Fitzgerald explained. “He can either fold up his tent or he can get after it.”
Senior wing Jon Kinloch was among those who chose the latter, shaking off a 2-for-10 shooting debacle in Bozeman by hitting on 10 of 18 en route to 26 points against the Titans.
Paul Rogers added 15 points for the West Coast Conference Bulldogs, who never trailed and led by as many as 31 points in improved their record to 3-2.
Gonzaga shot 53 percent from the floor, hitting on 33 of 62 attempts, and was 11 of 12 from the foul line. In contrast, the Titans (1-3) made just 20 of 70 from the floor for 28 percent, and were outrebounded by GU 46-35.
John Williams played well for Fullerton State, finishing with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Gonzaga used a 9-0 run midway through the first half to turn a 16-14 lead into a 25-14 cushion, with Rogers scoring the final two baskets of the spurt.
A 3-pointer by Fullerton’s Chris St. Clair 6:40 before halftime pulled the Titans within 25-21, but Gonzaga gradually pulled away and led 43-28 to start the second half.
“We played the kind of basketball be have to play to be successful,” Fitzgerald said. “Fullerton’s not Villanova, but it’s still a game where we came into their place and got out with a win.
“I don’t like splits (winning one of two road games), but they look real good come Sunday morning. I was pleased with the way we bounced back after Montana State.”
