Martin Masters Becker On German’s Hometown Turf
Todd Martin said it was one of his best days on a tennis court.
Not only did Martin beat Boris Becker in the semifinals of the $6 million Grand Slam Cup, the American beat the German before 11,000 cheering German fans in Becker’s hometown.
Becker rallied during a see-saw fourth set, but Martin held on to win 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at the $6 million tournament.
The 6-foot-6 Martin will face Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia in today’s final at the world’s richest tournament. First prize is worth $1.625 million.
Ivanisevic downed Yevgeny Kafelnikov 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 behind 41 aces in the other semifinal.
