State Unemployment Rate Up

Compiled From Wire Services

Idaho’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate jumped to its highest level in nine months during November as the state’s still-healthy economy drew more than 4,000 additional workers.

The Department of Employment on Friday forecast the November jobless rate at 5.6 percent, up a half point from October and the highest rate since last February.

Increased retail employment prompted by the earlier start of the Christmas shopping season because of an early Thanksgiving did not generate the kinds of additional job opportunities to accommodate the new job entrants as well as those who lost work as weather and market conditions slowed construction, logging and potato processing.

Compounding the problem was an essentially snowless November that kept the winter resorts from hiring people for the ski season.
