Jamie Stone scored 17 points, including two free throws to ice the game with 9 seconds left, to lead the visiting Deer Park Stags (1-0 NEA, 2-1) to a 53-49 win over the Newport Grizzlies (0-1, 2-2) Saturday night in a Northeast A game.
Newport’s Heidi Schulz, who led the team with 14 points, hit two baskets to tie the game with at 49 with 58 seconds left before Tricia Gest’s lay-in put the Stags up for good.
