Car Bomb Explodes; 6 Killed, 15 Injured
Six people were killed and 15 injured Monday when a car bomb exploded in one of the worst attacks in Madrid in years - a blast police suspect was set by the Basque separatist group ETA.
Those killed were civilians employed as mechanics or chauffeurs by the navy, police said. They were traveling home in an unmarked navy van when the bomb, placed in a parked car, exploded about 3 p.m.
Three other people also in the van were among 15 injured in the blast, police said. Five of the injured were in serious condition.
The explosion left bodies scattered about the street, cars burning and windows shattered in dozens of shops and houses. It occurred on a heavily traveled road in the southern neighborhood of Vallecas.
