Late Basket Beats Zags

Greta Koss nailed a jump shot from the left edge of the foul line with 5 seconds left to lift Montana to a 56-55 victory over Gonzaga in a women’s non-conference basketball game Monday night at Martin Centre.

Regan McCliment, a sophomore from Central Valley, made a short jumper from the left baseline with 1:23 left and after a Montana miss drove the lane, giving GU a 56-55 lead with 34 seconds remaining. It was the first time the Bulldogs had the lead since 7-4 less than 4 minutes into the game.

However, the Grizzlies (5-0) worked the ball to Koss, who spoiled the upset bid by the Bulldogs (1-6).

“I thought they did a real good job,” UM coach Robin Selvig said of the Bulldogs. “They hung around and hung around. They got all the rebounds in the second half and when they made a run we never answered.”

The taller Grizzlies, who just beaten a Utah team that had hammered the Zags 89-59, were outrebounded 22-12 in the second half and 37-30 for the game.

Chelsea Herman and McCliment fueled GU’s run from 10 down early in the second half. Herman finished with 15 points and McCliment had 12.

Koss, a 6-1 junior, had 17 points and eight rebounds for Montana.
