Christmas Fund 1995 Reasons For Giving As Varied As Hearts

Beverly Vorpahl Staff writer

The Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund spreads holiday cheer in a variety of ways.

Gifts are made to the fund - all of which is passed on to low-income families in the form of food vouchers and toys - in memory or honor of friends and loved ones, as repayment for past kindnesses, as gifts to one another, as thank-yous for any number of reasons. And some just because it makes the giver feel good.

Lilac City Decorators Inc., 220 E. Augusta, gave $1,000 with a letter from Chuck Phelan, chairman: “On behalf of our staff and crew, we are privileged to again share our good fortune, so that others may enjoy a brighter holiday season.”

That’s a good reason.

On Tuesday, 3,419 people applied for a little seasonal cheer from the Christmas Bureau. They represent 1,570 children and 1,849 adults.

Those donating $75 in Tuesday’s Christmas Fund mail were Goldie Berger, 1704 S. Cedar; Stanley Berger, 1704 S. Cedar; and one anonymous donor. Giving $70 were members of the Happy Snip and Stitch Sewing Club, Spokane. Judith Cutler, 4918 N. Altamont, gave $60 in memory of Bernice Aikins.

Those contributing $50 were Joseph and Charri Doeleman, 2410 W. Broad; the Bishop’s Guild of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist; Ellen S. McDermott, 312 W. Hastings; Ronald White and Linda Moulder; Nancy and family in honor of her father; Oscar and Lillian Olsen, 7807 E. Maxwell; and Lloyd and Shirley Seehorn, Rockford, “in memory of our beloved daughter, Donna, who died of cancer in September.”

Bismark Place; Virginia Stare, 172 S. Coeur d’Alene; Robert and Susan Anselmo, 3334 W. Bruce, “in loving memory of Joseph M. and Elizabeth Anselmo. Christmas was their favorite time of the year and they always made a contribution to The Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund.”

Other $50 contributions were from Randall and Lynda Steinman, 1012 E. Baldwin; The Schroeders, 5205 S. Cree Drive; Marian and Bob Monroe, 2403 W. Houston, “hoping this little gift will help make a happy Christmas to those in need”; Herbert Faire, 13008 E. 10th, “in memory of my wife, Mary, who passed away last spring. May some family have a merry Christmas.”

Willow, “in memory of the four precious Schliebe boys”; James and Joanne Flynn, Cheney; Rona William and Jocelyn Pfeifer “in loving memory of my grandma, Winnie Bauer, who taught us all the true meaning of giving”; Elizabeth A. Phillips, N. 9610 Ridgecrest Drive.

More $50 gifts came from Helen B. Brown, 1712 E. 32nd Court; Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Lorsung, 6908 E. Mansfield; and six anonymous donors.

Those contributing $35: Marjorie I. Weaver, 911 W. 13th; Suzanne Ehart Bell, Cheney; and one anonymous donor; $30 gifts came from Vivian Hopkins, 528 W. Donating $10 were Stella Hautala, 4711 N. Napa; Steven Balcom, 5309 N. Whitehouse; and two anonymous givers, including Grandma and Rachel who gave for their beloved kitty, Snookums, who won’t be with Grandma for the first Christmas in 20 years.

And, another favorite little-kid note, this one from Mitch Leppo, who signed his name not once, but three times - once in black and twice with green ink:

“Dear Christmas Fund, I’m 6-1/2 years old. This money is my December allowance. Please use it to buy toys for kids.”
