Dollar Creeps Ahead

The dollar edged higher against major currencies Tuesday as new domestic inflation numbers raised doubts about a U.S. interest rate cut while expectations of lower rates in Europe persisted.

The dollar rose against the Japanese yen partly because of a large order to sell yen. But the greenback gained against the German mark mostly because of the shift in thinking on interest rates.

Trading was light.
