Ferris, Mead Gymnasts Meet Favorites

Ferris and Mead are team favorites for Saturday’s sixth annual Inland Empire Cup gymnastics championships at North Central High School.

Also scheduled to attend the unique event are the host Indians, Rogers, Kamiakin, Kennewick, Richland, Hanford and Port Angeles. Defending team champ Central Valley hadn’t applied as of Tuesday.

“We have room for 12 teams, so we could accommodate the rest of the (Greater Spokane League),” said NC coach Bob Litton.

Junior varsity gymnasts compete in the morning. Varsity competition is expected to run from 4-6:30 p.m. The event costs $4 for adults and $3 for students, with proceeds benefiting NC’s team.

Under the varsity format, two-girl teams compete for an all-around score, and four of those scores are compiled for an overall team tally. CV’s Bethany Porter and Lindsey Linerud won last year’s all-around.

Rogers offers the GSL’s only other invitational.

Pelo remains hospitalized

Longtime Rogers wrestling coach Ken Pelo is still hospitalized and will miss tonight’s dual meet and likely the weekend Hillyard M-II Mallet tournament hosted by the Pirates.

Pelo contracted a staph infection in his leg 1-1/2 weeks ago and the infection was complicated by the fact Pelo has no spleen or gall bladder.

“They are needed to battle the infection,” said assistant coach Walt Arnold, “so it is more serious for him.”

Additionally, Pelo initially had a reaction to medication and that prolonged his hospital stay. The intravenous medicine now is working and the infection is subsiding.

“He won’t be on the sidelines Thursday and it’s questionable if he will be back Saturday,” said Arnold. “But he will probably be able to make the trip to Seattle next weekend.”

Groom on the mend

Pirates wrestler Darryl Groom, a district champion last year, also will be out of action this week after severely spraining his ankle at the Inland Empire Classic last weekend.

At first, it was feared the ankle was broken. Depending upon an orthopedic doctor’s recommendation, Groom could be back wrestling next week.
