One Dead, 19 Injured In Nicaraguan Riot
Students demanding more university funding took hostages outside the Nicaraguan president’s house on Wednesday, drawing riot police into a clash that ended with a professor’s death.
At least 19 people were injured, including 12 students and three police officers who were beaten or shot, said Arnoldo Pastan, an assistant police commander.
Three people remained in serious condition Wednesday night, the Lenin Fonseca Hospital reported. Four unidentified policemen remained the students’ hostages late Wednesday.
The fighting started when 2,000 demonstrators seized at least four police officers outside the home of President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro.
