Medical Lake passed its first Northwest League challenge on Friday, but not without a little help from Freeman.

Carlos Simmons scored 23 as the Cardinals (1-0, 2-2), last year’s State A runner-up, beat Freeman 59-51 on the road.

The Scotties (1-1, 5-1) saw their perfect record end when they missed 17 of 32 free throws and shot just 28 percent from the floor. Freeman had a 47-22 rebounding edge, led by Marc Reed’s 13.
