Ferris Trio Helps Team To Second-Place Finish
Ferris had the individual stars but Kamiakin had the depth during Saturday’s sixth annual Inland Empire Cup team all-around gymnastics championship at North Central.
Liz Miller of Ferris won the vault and joined teammate Kacey Fredrickson to win the all-around. Also, the Saxons’ Kim George won the uneven bars and Ferris placed second in three individual events.
Yet Kamiakin of Kennewick outscored Ferris 120-118.05 for the team title, led by floor exercise champion Jamie Conrad. Sara Schilling teamed with Conrad for second in the all-around, and Kamiakin’s Jeni Gale and Karen Bird placed third all-around.
Mead (114.9) finished third among the 10 teams, a whisker ahead of Port Angeles (114.55), the first west-side team to compete in NC’s invite.
Winning scores were: all-around, Fredrickson and Miller, 33.2; vault, Miller, 8.4; bars, George, 7.5; beam, Shelley Cunanan of defending team champ Central Valley, 8.3; and floor, Conrad, 9.25.
Wrestling
Daryn Steeneck (129 pounds) and James Dawe (135) won their weight divisions to lead host Rogers to the title at the Hillyard M-2 Mallett Invitational.
The Pirates scored 191 points to outdistance runner-up Mead (160.5) at the 15-team tournament.
Steeneck pinned Nick Fuller in an all-Rogers final. Dawe had a first-round pin against Cory McLaughlin of Chewelah.
Isaac Franklin (168), Eric Strom (178) and Steve Fish (215) won titles for Mead. Shadle Park (129) finished third, thanks to titles from Shawn Howard (122) and Sabino Hernandez (190).
Nick Bliss (141), Rex Mangiaracina (178) and Dave Rucker (190) won titles to lead Gonzaga Prep to the championship of the nine-team East Valley Invitational.
The Bullpups scored 203 points to outdistance runner-up Lakeside (185.5). Nate Bohl’s title at 148 led Lakeside, the lone Class A/B team at the tourney.
Tom Jud won the won the 215-pound division and his Cheney Blackhawks finished fifth at the nine-team Sedro-Woolley Tournament.
Jacinto Shamp (129) and Gabe Schaefer (135) finished second and Eric Seward (122) third for the Blackhawks.
