NHL
Mark Messier had two goals and an assist, and Mike Richter got his 13th career shutout as the New York Rangers extended their home unbeaten streak to 15 games Monday night with a 3-0 victory over the Washington Capitals.
Messier scored a power-play goal early in the first period, and added his second goal late in the third to extend the Rangers’ run at home to 13-0-2 since Oct. 22.
Messier’s assist on Pat Verbeek’s goal with 6:02 gone in the third was the 901st of his 17-year career, tying him with Bryan Trottier for seventh on the NHL career list.

Oilers’ future in jeopardy
The owner of the Edmonton Oilers is optimistic he can sell enough season tickets to keep the team from moving.
Peter Pocklington said the Oilers must sell the equivalent of 13,000 season tickets by May 31 to qualify for a $7 million aid package from the league.
He said without that money it makes little sense for the Oilers to stay in Edmonton because the team would be unable to compete with other teams in terms paying players.
The Oilers have 6,700 season-ticket holders and have been averaging just more than 11,000 fans a game this season. In addition to nearly doubling the season-ticket base, the team also has to sell all of its rink board advertising slots and the remaining 18 unsold luxury seat boxes.
Allen considers options
Paul Allen, owner of the National Basketball Association’s Portland Trail Blazers and a billionaire computer magnate, has examined the books of the Florida Panthers as he decides whether to buy an existing NHL franchise, wait for the next NHL expansion, or skip the whole thing.
The Blazers last week sent surveys to their season-ticket holders, asking if they would be willing to buy NHL tickets, and if so, how much they would be willing to pay. Employees also surveyed fans at a Portland Winter Hawks junior game. Allen is expected to announce his plans by the end of the month.

Montreal right wing Andrei Kovalenko has been placed on the disabled list for seven days, retroactive to Saturday, because of a broken nose… .
