Ferris Executes To Perfection And Defeats Cv

GSL girls basketball

The Ferris plan was simple, take care of the basketball. The Saxons did and took care of Central Valley’s perfect start to the Greater Spokane League girls basketball season.

Using 6-foot-1 Jennifer Swinton as more of a decoy than a threat, the Saxons were careful with the ball and their shots in rolling to a 51-40 victory at Ferris Thursday night.

“Our big goal was to take care of the basketball,” Ferris coach Janet Skaife said. “Jayme (Morrisette), Amy (George) and Jennifer did a good job breaking the press. We were patient. I thought we controlled the tempo.”

For Central Valley (3-1, 6-1), it was the exact opposite. The Bears had 21 turnovers and shot a miserable 11 of 46 from the field. The only quarter the Bears were effective was the second, when they had just three turnovers to Ferris’ six to rally from a 9-5 deficit to take a 19-17 lead at the half.

In the second half, the Saxons (2-1, 5-2) had just six turnovers, made 9 of 17 shots and got to the foul line 25 times.

“Ferris wanted to win more than we did,” CV coach Dale Poffenroth said. “We came in thinking we’d be all right. We won a lot of games, including the summer. Sometimes you get to believing you just have to show up. Ferris didn’t believe that. They out-played us.”

The Bears were 1 of 13 in the first quarter, going scoreless the last 4:08. However, they had an 8-2 surge in the last 2 minutes of the half to grab the lead.

However, after Carrie Sanders scored from the lane to make it 23-19 90 seconds into the third quarter, Ferris got eight straight points off CV turnovers to take the lead for good.

The lead was 33-30 entering the fourth quarter and Swinton wasn’t a factor. She had two shots in the first half and her two baskets in the third quarter came after she hauled in offensive rebounds.

“CV is so quick we wanted to wear down their point (on defense),” Skaife said. “We passed the ball around the outside, making the point run back and forth. That’s why they had to use so many different players on the point. We played more perimeter than we usually do. Usually we’ll look for Swinton more.”

Swinton finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and a handful of blocks. Morrisette had 18 points, seven off free throws in the last 65 seconds. Sophomore Amy George added 11.

CV was led by Crystal Lee with 17, six below her average. She had 10 at halftime but made one basket on one shot in the third quarter before making five of six free throws in the last 25 seconds. Rikki Jackson had 12 points, all on 3-pointers.
