Flyers Can’t Solve Richter; Rangers Win

Associated Press

NHL

Mike Richter withstood a first-period barrage and turned away 31 of 32 shots as the New York Rangers defeated the host Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 Thursday night.

Richter is 10-2-2 in his last 14 decisions and leads the NHL in victories (16-8-3).

The Rangers’ defense clamped down on the Flyers over the final 20 minutes. Philadelphia, despite having a power play at 6:39, didn’t get off a shot on goal in the third period until 10:38 remained. New York didn’t allow the Flyers a shot on their two third-period power plays.

Philadelphia took control of the opening 20 minutes, firing 19 shots at Richter. Although the Rangers managed just five shots, the teams ended the first period in a 1-1 tie.

Jeff Beukeboom gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead with his third goal at 11:26 of the second.
