Newport Runs Past Orofino

Prep basketball

Newport countered Orofino’s size advantage with speed and quickness and held the Maniacs off for a 48-45 win at the Priest River Christmas Tournament Thursday night.

Orofino’s junior 6-foot-9 twins Zack and Josh Wilson scored 19 and 10 points, respectively.

Newport’s 6-5 senior Nate Carrara shot 10 for 20 from the floor and led all scorers with 20 points, in addition to hauling in 16 rebounds.

Newport improved its record to 4-2.

Selkirk (4-2) raced to a 21-10 lead and was never threatened in the opening of the Cusick Tournament.

Selkirk’s Shawn Pichette scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Falls Christian’s (1-4) Aaron Burns and Ben Larson scored 14 points each.

In the other game of the Cusick Tournament, Clark Fork (3-4) had a nine-point lead at halftime - 26-17 - thanks largely to Cusick (1-4), which shot just 25 percent from the floor in the first half.

Cusick rallied and eventually took a two-point lead, but Clark Fork hit nine field goals in the last 6 minutes, four of which came from Ian Reuter, to get the win.

West Valley (6-0) used a smothering defense, heolding Lakeland to just eight points in the second quarter, and went on to win.

Even though Lakeland was the bigger team, the Eagles’ Vinnie Pecht and Joe Bonner each finished with 11 rebounds. Pecht also had eight blocked shots.

For Lakeland (0-6), Paul Lowalczyk had 15 points and Jared Mudge had 13.

Kellogg (5-1) shattered visiting Wallace (4-5) and held the Miners to single-digit point production in three out of four quarters.

Casey Fisher, the Wildcats’ 6-7 post, shot 11 for 15 from the field for a game-high 23 points and collected 13 rebounds, nine of which came at the offensive end.

Clark Fork (4-6) earned a 34-29 victory over Cusick (0-5) in the Cusick Tournament with the help of Amy Longstreet’s 16-point performance.

The Panthers were led by Salina Nenema’s 11 points.

Priest River’s (6-5) defensive duo of Sarah Suchaki and Monica Ruiz held Potlatch scoring threat Lacie Martin to just two points in the win.

The Spartans’ Missy Ennis had 10 rebounds while point guard Katie Duly had five assists and set the offenisve tone for her squad.
