Obituaries

John Ferrell Spokane

Memorial service for John L. “Jack” Ferrell, 69, will be at 9:30 a.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mr. Ferrell, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.

He graduated from North Central High School and, in September 1944, entered the Army.

He served until June 1965 and received the Army Commendation Medal.

He had lived in Seattle, Tacoma and Pasco and had returned to Spokane in 1971. He worked part time for H&R Block as a consultant.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1474 and American Legion Post Falls Post No. 143.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma Ferrell; three sons, John, Berry and James Ferrell, all of Spokane; three daughters, Jacqueline Fluery, Joan Porter and Dyanne Reed, all of Spokane; two sisters, Thelma Cox and Betty DeVito, both of Spokane; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Arlan Grubbs Colfax, Wash.

Service for Arlan F. Grubbs, 62, will be at 1 p.m. today at Colfax First Baptist Church. Private burial will be at Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Grubbs, who was born in Springbrook, Wis., died Tuesday at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane.

He joined the Air Force in 1951 and moved to Colfax when he was discharged. He went to work for the Postal Service and was a mail carrier in Colfax for many years. He retired in 1988. After he retired, he worked as a newspaper carrier for The SpokesmanReview until 1994.

He was a member of the Colfax Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Codd-French American Legion Post.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Shirley; two daughters, Sandi Marple of Colfax and Lori Gaither of Coos Bay, Ore.; three sons, Larry Grubbs of Spokane, Mike Grubbs of Colfax and Steve Grubbs of Bellevue, Wash.; one sister, Marie Whitesell of Covina, Calif.; three brothers, Howard Grubbs of Brantwood, Wis., Norman Grubbs of Hayward, Wis., and Andrew Grubbs of Trego, Wis.; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Colfax Volunteer Firemen or Colfax First Baptist Church.

John LeMonier Spokane

Funeral Mass for John P. LeMonier, 86, is planned for 10 a.m. today at Jump Off Joe Catholic Church in Valley, Wash. Burial will be at Jump Off Joe Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. LeMonier died Wednesday.

He was born in Minot, N.D.

He retired from the city of Spokane after 40 years. He had lived in Spokane for 58 years.

He was a member of Jump Off Joe Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary Gardiner of Otis Orchards and Natalie Lemmore of Dover, Del.; one brother, Lind Lemmonier of Spokane; one sister, Vera; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Josephine Kaufman Spokane

Services for Josephine Kaufman, 86, will be at 2 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home with burial at to follow at Chattaroy Cemetery.

Mrs. Kaufman died Thursday.

She was born Belcourt, N.D., and had lived in Spokane for more than 20 years. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by four daughters, Shirley Pedersen of Spokane, Arlene Valdez of San Jose, Calif., Toni Ness of Ephrata, Wash., and Betty Fowler of Chattaroy; one son, Robert Kaufman of Helena; one sister, Adel Balazs of Helena; and 28 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

John Gallagher Spokane

Funeral Mass for John Eugene Gallagher, 77, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gallagher, who was a lifetime Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

He was a member of Pipe Fitters Union Local No. 44, St. Paschal’s Catholic Church, the Elks Club, and Air Force Retirees. He served in the Air Force during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; three sons, Michael Bash of San Diego, John Gallagher of Spokane and Kenneth Gallagher of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Lucille Curran of St. Paul, Minn., and Mary Parker of Shelby, Mont.; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Irene Chilson Spokane

Service for Irene I. Chilson, will be at 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Chilson, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Wednesday.

She had worked as a clerk at various drugstores in Spokane and retired in 1970.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose in Loon Lake.

She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Bud Chilson; one daughter, Dody Cress of Spanaway, Wash.; one son, Larry Cress of Parkland, Wash.; two sisters, Caroline Rich and Dorothy Benshoof, both of Spokane; two brothers, Everett Remmers of Spokane and Sam Remmers of Clarkston, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Kathleen Guffey Spokane

Vigil service for Kathleen O. Guffey, 74, was Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Mrs. Guffey, who died Dec. 15, was born in Spokane and attended school in Cheney.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Her husband, Carl Guffey, died in 1978.

Survivors include three sons, Mace Clark, George Clark and William Clark, all of Spokane; two daughters, Adella Clark and Patti Weiler, both of Spokane; two brothers, Francis Adley of Spokane and Cyril Reynolds of Cheney; a sister, Rosemary Thomas of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

George Pullins Post Falls

Memorial service for George L. Pullins, 70, was Wednesday at the English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls.

Mr. Pullins, who was born in Delta, Colo., died Saturday.

He was raised in Caldwell, Idaho, and served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to Caldwell and later moved to Metaline Falls, Wash. He moved to Post Falls 19 years ago after working as a miner in the Pend Oreille Mine in Metaline Falls.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis.

Survivors include three sons, Ron of Post Falls, Cecil of Washington and Marc of Fairbanks, Alaska; a brother, Cleo Pullins of California; a sister, Gwen Therber of Crouch, Idaho; and eight grandchildren.

Alice Weigand Spokane

Funeral Mass for Alice P. Weigand Kennedy, 90, is planned for 10 a.m. today at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Her son, the Most Rev. William K. Weigand, D.D., will concelebrate the service. HennesseySmith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Weigand, who was born in Odessa, Wash., died Wednesday.

She was a county auditor in Idaho for three terms.

Her husband, Harold Weigand Sr., preceded her in death.

She was a member of St. Augustine Parish.

Mrs. Weigand is survived by four sons, the Rev. Harold Weigand Jr., O.S.B., of Mount Angel Abbey, St. Benedict, Ore., Robert Weigand of Spokane, the Rev. William Weigand, D.D., of Sacramento, Calif., and Kenneth Weigand of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Elmer Irons Sandpoint

Memorial service for Elmer Milton Irons, 89, was Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Sandpoint.

Mr. Irons, who was born in Waterville, Wash., died Thursday.

He worked as a wheat farmer in Colfax, Wash., before moving to Sandpoint in 1945. He operated a dairy farm in Kootenai.

Mr. Irons loved animals and was a member of the Kootenai Grange. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gracie. Survivors include a son, Ron of Arizona; two daughters, Doris Stockman of Arizona and Eileen Rasmussen of California; a sister, Marie Phillip of Sandpoint; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Bessie Mateer Spokane

No service will be held for Bessie B. Mateer, 96, at her request. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mateer, who was born in Iowa, died last Saturday.

She had lived in Spokane for 25 years and was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, William Mateer, died in 1962.

There are no known surviving family members.

Gladys Lundstrum Fairfield

Memorial service for Gladys Lundstrum, 94, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairfield Presbyterian Church. Private burial will precede. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lundstrum, who died Wednesday, was born in Mountain Grove, Mo.

She married C.E. Lundstrum in 1920 in Waverly. They lived there until 1981, when they moved to the Good Samaritan Apartments in Fairfield. Her husband died in 1983.

She was a member of Fairfield Presbyterian Church, Rebekah Lodge and Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include one son, Bud Lundstrum of Waverly; one daughter, Laurel Wark of Wellton, Ariz.; one sister, Claudia Mandere of Sonoma, Calif.; one brother, Frank Goff of Woodside, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Center or the Fairfield Presbyterian Church.

Lester Johnson Spokane

No service will be held for Lester F. Johnson, 96, at his request. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson died last Saturday.

He was born in Nassau, Minn., and had lived in Spokane for 41 years.

He was a World War I veteran and worked for the mail railroad service.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys; one son, Neil Johnson of Bend, Ore.; one daughter, Shirley Reynolds of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

George Derr Liberty Lake

Memorial service for George A. Derr, 76, will be held at a later date.

Mr. Derr, a lifetime Spokane area resident, died Dec. 12.

He graduated from Gonzaga Prep and Gonzaga University.

Mr. Derr served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War as an Alamo Scout with the 6th Army. He retired as a major.

He then taught in the Spokane School District until his retirement. He officiated football for 44 years.

Mr. Derr was a member of the Liberty Lake Over the Hill Gang.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice (Titus) Derr, at the home; one daughter, Dee Hubbard; one brother, Mark Derr of Seattle; five sisters, Mary, Zita and Patsy, all of Spokane, MonaAnn of California and Jean of Florida; and two grandsons.

Joan Jurgensen Lewiston

Service has been held for Joan M. Linehan Jurgensen, 57. Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home of Lewiston was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jurgensen, a longtime Washington and Oregon educator, died last Saturday from cancer.

She was born in Lewiston and graduated from Genesee (Idaho) High School. She received a business degree from Gonzaga University and a masters from University of Idaho.

She taught high school in Washington at Wilbur, Kahlotus, Keller and Republic and also at high schools and colleges in Oregon.

She married Jay Jurgensen in 1963 and later divorced.

Mrs. Jurgensen was a member of many Catholic, education and business associations.

Survivors include a brother, Greg Linehan of Genesee; two daughters, Karen Jurgensen of Seattle and Kirsten Jurgensen of Oregon; her parents, Donald and Marie Linehan of Genesee; and three grandchildren.

Fristz Carlson Coeur d’Alene

At his request, no service will be held for Fristz H. “Buster” Carlson, 65. Yates Funeral Home of Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Carlson, who was born in Worcester, Mass., died Tuesday.

He joined the Navy at the age of 17, and married Estelle Audette in 1952.

He retired from the Navy after 21 years of service and began a career in the fishing industry in Washington and Alaska.

He retired in 1992 and moved to Coeur d’Alene, where he worked as manager of a downtown apartment complex.

Survivors include three sons, Roy of Virginia, Guy of Alaska and Eric of Hayden, Idaho; four daughters, Debbie Keltner of Virginia, Gail Carlson of Athol, Idaho, and Donna Ianniciello and Crystal Wood, both of Washington; several brothers and sisters, seven grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Geraldine Ray Spokane

Private inurnment for Geraldine R. Ray, 73, is planned. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ray, who died Dec. 15, was born in Northport, Wash. She moved to the Spokane area 45 years ago.

She was a World War II Navy veteran and also worked for the Army Corps of Engineers.

Mrs. Ray worked as an engineer for the Spokane County Planning Department and retired in 1977.

She was a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral.

Survivors include her husband, Lyle Ray; one son, Dan Ray of Spokane; one daughter, Janine Gregory of Spokane; three sisters, Angie Nett and Bernie Dunnigan, both of Portland, and Bobbie Kimsey of California; and one grandson.

Arthur ‘Sonny’ Manthe Cheney

A private family service is planned for Arthur J. “Sonny” Manthe, 69.

Mr. Manthe died Dec. 14.

Born in Long Beach, Calif., he later moved to the Missoula area.

He then moved to Vancouver, Wash., where he worked as a mechanic for Clark County.

Mr. Manthe retired to the Cheney area in 1984.

Survivors include one son, Roger Manthe of Oregon City, Ore.; one daughter, Robin Brookhart of Oregon City; one brother, Emmett Manthe of Cheney; and two sisters, Deloris Canaday of Cheney and Corless Hensely of California.

Martha Harris Yakima

Graveside service for Martha Harris, 79, will be at 1 p.m. today at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside, Wash. Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harris, a former Spokane resident, died Wednesday at Crescent Convalescent Center in Yakima.

She was born in Tuttle, N.D.

In 1941 she married Alvin Harris in Coeur d’Alene. They operated a poultry farm in Spokane from 1945 until 1968. They moved to Yakima in 1994.

She is survived by her husband, Alvin; three daughters, Mary Ann Bliesner of Sunnyside, Dorothy Szep of Molalla, Ore., and Betty Woodgeard of Pahrump, Nev.; three sisters, Emma Green of Yuma, Ariz., Alvina Feickert of Bismarck, N.D.; and one half-sister, Emma Landenberger of Tuttle, N.D.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
