Good Fowl, Bad Foul

Staff And Wire Reports

Hunting

Waterfowl hunters are particularly at risk this time of year because wind and foul conditions are weather patterns that add up to good duck hunting - and dangerous boating conditions.

At least one waterfowler has died in a boating accident during each of the past three Washington hunting seasons. Others have died in Idaho.

Adding to the dangers of weather, many duck hunting boats are overloaded with decoys, dogs, hunters and gear.

Here are some basic safety points:

Don’t overload your boat. A boat loaded with hunters, dogs, decoys and other equipment can easily be capsized.

Wear a Coast Guard approved life vest or float coat. The law says you must have one; good sense dictates you wear it.

If wearing chest waders, cinch a belt around the waist while in the boat to seal in air that will help you float should the boat capsize, and also keep water from flooding in.

Use the buddy system. Boating solo dramatically increases the chance of getting into a situation you can’t escape.
