Russian Fishing Boat Sinks In Norwegian Sea

Compiled From Wire Services

A Russian trawler sank early Tuesday off northwestern Norway, leaving at least one crewman dead and 10 missing.

Fourteen crew members of the Novgorodets were taken aboard another Russian fishing boat, the Lenz, authorities said.

Norwegian rescue helicopters and ships were searching for the missing crewmen in the Norwegian Sea, the Norwegian news agency NTB reported.

Rescuers found one body, NTB reported. Hypothermia can be fatal in such frigid waters after only 15 to 30 minutes.

The ship sent a distress signal about 5:30 a.m., saying it was taking on water about 23 miles off the island of Vannoya, above the Arctic Circle about 750 miles north of Oslo.
