Cyclist’s Jaw Broken In Beating; Suspect Arrested

Ward Sanderson Staff Writer

A 22-year-old Valley man was dragged from his bicycle Saturday morning and beaten, resulting in fractures to his face.

Another Valley man, 21-year-old Terry Lynch, was arrested on a second-degree assault charge shortly after 12:30 a.m.

Sheriff’s deputies reported that the victim, his mother and other relatives were at an Idaho bar. A fight started between the victim and Lynch, and two others jumped into the fray before it was broken up.

The victim left on his bicycle to return to Washington. When he reached the 5400 block of North Estep in Otis Orchards, a car drove up beside him. Three people got out of the car, pulled him off the bike and beat him. The victim identified Lynch as one of them, deputies said.

A woman living nearby persuaded the assailants to stop, and she took the victim inside. The assailants stood in the yard, yelling. But by the time deputies arrived, the trio were gone.

The victim was taken to a hospital and scheduled for surgery. He suffered a broken jaw and facial bone.

Sheriff’s detectives are searching for two more suspects.

Man arrested on drug charges

Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man on felony drug charges early Christmas Eve morning after he and another man were pulled over in an apparently stolen car.

A woman reported that her blue 1994 Honda Accord had been stolen from the 7100 block of East Mansfield. Deputy Mark Stewart was called to investigate.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m., the deputy spotted the Honda at the intersection of Utah and Coleman and signaled the driver to pull over.

The passenger, 24-year-old Daniel Byron Onodera, was arrested on the drug charges after the deputy found a substance in the car he thought was cocaine. Stewart also found items suspected to be drug paraphernalia.

A computer check showed that the driver, 18-year-old Michael Hugh Allen, was also wanted for arrest. Allen was also taken into custody.

Valley man attacked

What started out as a Valley stabbing investigation ended up in a brawl between a sheriff’s deputy and another man at Deaconess Medical Center.

The assaulted deputy, Mike Beckman, and other deputies arrived at 800 N. Lily at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. They thought they were responding to a stabbing but instead found a 39-year-old man suffering from a head injury. They found the victim had been attacked with a baseball bat.

Deputies followed a trail of blood for several blocks but couldn’t find the assailant. The victim was taken to Deaconess Medical Center.

Beckman went to the hospital to question the man. Beckman reported that while he was in the emergency room, 18-year-old Joseph Ward charged in and shoved a nurse against a wall and then started waving his fists around her head. A hospital security guard intervened, and Ward allegedly took a swing at the guard. A fight ensued.

An off-duty deputy was there and helped the guard and Beckman. Ward was arrested on multiple assault charges and an outstanding fourth-degree assault warrant.
