Postal Patrons Prefer Blondes
Marilyn Monroe graced the bestselling postage stamp of 1995, but Elvis is still the stamp king.
The blonde bombshell turned in a 46.3 million stamp performance, the Postal Service reported on Wednesday - best-selling single stamp of the year.
The Civil War and Legends of the West stamps actually sold more, 46.6 million and 46.5 million respectively, but there were 20 stamps in each set so no single stamp compared with sales of the Monroe stamp.
The 1993 Elvis Presley stamp still holds the record for sales by a wide margin at 124 million stamps.
Sales records are reported for commemorative stamps, those issued for a limited time to celebrate a particular person or event. So-called definitive stamps, the standard ones in everyday use, sell in larger numbers because they remain on sale much longer and are used routinely.
