Residents Claim Police Ignored Zulu Rampage

Compiled From Wire Services

A team of Cabinet ministers traveled to violence-torn KwaZulu-Natal province on Wednesday to investigate allegations that police didn’t do enough to stop a Christmas Day attack that killed 14 people.

Local residents claim police did not respond as more than 600 attackers swept into the town of Izingolweni in KwaZulu-Natal, burning huts, shooting people and mutilating some of the corpses.

Victims were supporters of the African National Congress, while attackers were from a rival black group, the Zulu nationalist Inkatha Freedom Party, police and government officials said.

Inkatha wants autonomy for KwaZulu-Natal, the traditional Zulu homeland. It opposes local elections to pick officials who effectively take power from tribal chiefs and other traditional leaders.
