Athlete’s Death Remains Mystery

Compiled From Wire Services

At San Antonio, Bexar County medical examiners continued working to determine why a Southside High School basketball player died after colliding with another player during a game.

Cesar Ybarra, 15, died Wednesday night at Wilford Hall Medical Center, less than an hour after collapsing late in the second quarter of a freshman game at South San High School.

Southside coach Mike Kelly said the 5-foot-8, 150-pound Ybarra and another boy “were both going for a ball and collided. Their heads hit together. But they both got up and continued to play. About a minute later, the ball went out of bounds. The official handed (Ybarra) the ball. He was looking to inbound the ball, then fell.”

At Jackson, Miss., a high school basketball player collapsed while on the bench during the second period of a tournament game and was pronounced dead on arrival at Methodist Hospital.

Greg McDowell, 18, played earlier in the game.
