Vandals Do A Fade In The Second Half, Lose To Kansas St.
College women
Sophomore forward Brit Jacobson scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Kansas State Wildcats to a 68-55 win over the Idaho Vandals in women’s college basketball action Friday night in Manhattan, Kan.
Idaho (2-6) trailed by just one, 28-27, at the half, but was outscored by the Wildcats (7-5) 40-28 in the final 20 minutes.
Sophomore guard Kelli Johnson led Idaho with 16 points, three assists and three steals as she played all 40 minutes. Forward Mindy Rice had 11 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Vandals lost the game on the boards, being outrebounded 44-27, including a 20-4 advantage in offensive rebounds for Kansas State.
“I think we could have beaten them,” said Idaho coach Julie Holt. “They got too many offensive rebounds in the second half and that was the difference in the game. With 4 minutes left, we were down 5 and still have a chance to win.
“In the first half we played really good defense. We made a lot of things happen and outhustled them. The second half we just didn’t do it,” Holt said. “We made simple mistakes, which is the difference between winning and losing the game. Things that we worked on all week.”
Idaho led 5-2 early, but Kansas State went on a 16-3 run to lead 18-8. The Vandals still trailed 21-13 with 10 minutes left in the first half, but outscored the Wildcats 14-7 the rest of the half.
Kansas State started the second half hot, outscoring Idaho 13-4 the first 6 minutes to grab a 41-32 lead.
The Vandals cut the deficit to five, 56-51, with 4:45 left in the game. Idaho then went scoreless the next 3 minutes and couldn’t recover.
