Weber State Advances To Face Indiana

Jimmy DeGraffenreid scored 14 points to lead Weber State to 79-66 victory Friday over Kent in the first round of the Hoosier Classic men’s basketball tournament in Indianapolis.

Weber State (6-4) will face host Indiana, which defeated Appalachian State 103-59, in today’s championship game.

D.J. Bosse scored a game-high 18 points for Kent (5-2), which shot just 35.8 percent from the floor. Nate Reinking and Ed Norvell had 12 points apiece for Kent.

Indiana has never lost the Classic in the tournament’s 13 years.

Boise St. 66, Tenn.-Tech 65

In Boise, forward Phil Rodman scored 17 points, including a basket following an errant shot with 2.2 seconds left, to carry the Broncos (3-6) over the Golden Eagles (3-6) in the Albertson’s Holiday Classic.

Tennessee Tech took a 65-64 lead with 14 seconds left when Jason Embry scored on a breakaway layup after Greg Bibb stole the ball from the Broncos’ Shane Flanagan.

Portland 92, Texas Southern 64

Also in Boise, junior center Greg Klosterman scored a career-high 18 points and four other Pilots reached double figures as Portland (7-2) routed the Fighting Tigers (5-6) in the opener to gain a title-game shot against the host Broncos in the Albertson’s Holiday Classic.

Rice 73, Idaho State 56

In East Lansing, Mich., Tommy McGhee enjoyed a happy homecoming of sorts, leading the Owls (6-3) to a win over the Bengals (3-5) in the first round of the Oldsmobile Spartan Classic at Michigan State.

McGhee, a senior from Pontiac, Mich., poured in a career-high 31 points.

Montana St. 84, Butler 59

In Bozeman, Mont., Quadre Lollis had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Bobcats (7-2) over the Bulldogs (6-2) in the Holiday Stores Classic.

Kansas State 65, California 58

In Oakland, Calif., Tyrone Davis scored seven of his game-high 17 points in the final 2 minutes as the Wildcats (8-3) overcame a 14-point second-half deficit to beat the Bears (5-3) for the championship of the Otis Spunkmeyer Classic.

Trailing 53-39 with 10:44 to play, Kansas State recovered to outscore Cal 16-1 in the next 6 minutes to finally take the lead, 55-54.

Arizona St. 62, Southern Methodist 58

In Tempe, Ariz., Ron Riley scored a 3-pointer with 34.7 seconds remaining to cap his game-high 27 points and lead the Sun Devils (5-2) over the Mustangs (3-5) in the first round of the Tribune Classic.

Nebraska 99, Oregon 76

In Portland, Jaron Boone scored 25 points to lead the Huskers (9-2) over the Ducks (6-4) in the opening game of the Ford Far West Classic.

Pepperdine 69, Dartmouth 66

In Albuquerque, N.M., Bryan Hill scored 21 points and Gerald Brown hit six free throws in the final 2-1/2 minutes in the Waves’ (7-4) win over the Big Green (6-4) in the consolation game of the Lobo Invitational.

Hill hit 9 of 10 shots and had 11 rebounds as Pepperdine held off Dartmouth, whose bid to send the game into overtime failed when reserve P.J. Halas’ 3-pointer with 3 seconds left came up short.

Penn St. 70, Santa Clara 49

In San Jose, Calif., Glenn Sekunda scored 18 points and Dan Earl had 17 as the Nittany Lions (8-0) defeated the Broncos (8-3) in the first round of the Cable Car Classic at San Jose Arena.

Penn State held Santa Clara to only 31 percent shooting in the game, and limited star point guard Steve Nash to just six points.

Saint Mary’s 80, UC Santa Barbara 78 (OT)

In Santa Barbara, Calif., Jumoke Horton completed a three-point play with 2:28 remaining in overtime to help the Gaels (5-3) to victory over the Gauchos (3-5).

David Sivulich led Saint Mary’s with 26 points, scoring 21 in the second half. Horton finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds.
