Nhl Pension In Limbo

Compiled From Wire Services

While acknowledging it owes hundreds of retired players pension money, the NHL can’t agree on the amount or where it’s coming from.

A hearing to decide those issues began with the league and the oldtimers disagreeing on the bottom line.

The NHL said the retirees are owed a total of $23.6 million. The retired players are expected to ask for more than $28.4 million when they make their submission Wednesday.

The NHL’s figures were as of June 30, 1993, with $17.5 million coming from the NHL clubs and $6.1 from the current pension plan.

The figures from the retired players are expected to be up to Nov. 30, 1994, and based on different actuarial methods and interest tables.

Those eligible for the pension money are players who retired between 1917, the first year of the league, and 1982, when new benefits were put in place.
