Lunch Facts

The Personal Responsibility Act would combine 10 federal nutrition programs into block grants given directly to states.

These programs subsidize meals for lunch and breakfast for students at public schools, for summer meals and for meals and snacks served at daycare centers.

All school meals now are subsidized, including those that aren’t reducedprice or free.

As written, the plan would eliminate federal reimbursements for students who pay full-price, and the commodities program, which provides foods such as ground beef, vegetables and dairy products to the schools.

The free-lunch program probably would not be affected, although the price of reduced lunches could increase.

States would decide how the federal money is divided and would develop nutritional guidelines.
