Bonnie Harris Staff Writer

Burglars were busy on the North Side in the past week.

Early Tuesday, burglars broke into a house on the 1400 block of West Nora and took a portable CD player, television and VCR.

The next day, a South Perry coffee store was burglarized. Coffee at the Mill workers reported a broken window and a small amount of cash taken from the register.

Burglars stole an 8-week-old Rottweiler puppy from an apartment on the 500 block of East Hawthorne, police said.

A wedding ring was stolen from a home on the 1000 block of East Glass on Monday, a VCR was taken from a home on the 200 block of East Sanson and two horse saddles were stolen from a storage shed on the 2500 block of North Denver, police said.

All three of those burglaries were reported last week. In all but one case, entry was gained through unlocked doors or windows, police said.

Computer store robbed

A 24-year-old Spokane man led police on a chase through alleys and North Side yards early Tuesday after he was spotted breaking into a computer store on East Queen, authorities said.

Marcos Hilby, S708 Ralph, was booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree burglary, residential burglary and attempting to elude a police officer. Before he was arrested, his car rammed a house on East Wabash, breaking a natural gas pipe there, police said.

Life Fleet paramedics reported seeing a man burglarizing the Eager Beaver Computer Store, E41 Queen, shortly after 1 a.m. They followed the suspect’s car and when the suspect realized he was being followed, he sped up, turned off his car lights and tried to lose the ambulance.

Spokane police joined the chase and followed the suspect’s car through several alleys and yards before the suspect stopped between two houses on the 1600 block of East Wabash.

He ran from the car and broke into a nearby basement window, where he was found by police.

Police said they found a laptop computer from Eager Beaver in Hilby’s car.

Hotel clerk held up

An armed robber held up a clerk at the Apple Tree Inn, N9508 Division, on Monday.

The clerk told police she was working alone when the suspect entered the lobby about 7 p.m. He pointed a handgun at her and demanded money.

The robber took the cash and walked out the front door. He was described as white, in his late 20s, about 5-foot-7, 160 pounds, with brown hair and a well-trimmed beard. He wore wire frame glasses and a windbreaker. The clerk was not injured.

A second robbery occurred about 1 a.m. at the Quik Stop at Wellesley and Nevada.

The clerk said a white male in his 30s walked in and demanded money. He then fled south on foot. He was described as 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, with brown hair. He was wearing a tan coat, wire frame glasses and a goatee. The clerk was not injured.

County burglaries

A string of burglaries was also reported in Spokane County this past week.

On Jan. 30, A-Z Rental on North Wall was burglarized, deputies said. About 10 gallons of gas were siphoned from a compressor.

The next day, a house on the 8800 block of Country Homes Blvd. was burglarized. Thieves took a child’s piggy bank and an unknown amount of jewelry. They left behind a television set, Nintendo game and other valuables.

On Feb. 1, a home on the 200 block of Forest in Deer Park was the target of a break-in. A black onyx ring valued at $300 was taken. Deputies said the burglars gained entry through an unlocked back door.
