Michael McClain, a starting guard for the Washington basketball team, was suspended for the rest of the season after being arrested in connection with a scuffle with a girlfriend.

McClain, 22, was arrested by campus police early Sunday for investigation of fourth-degree assault, a gross misdemeanor. He was released Tuesday from the King County Jail on his own recognizance after a preliminary court appearance.

Michigan State athletic director Merrily Dean Baker, who clashed with former football coach George Perles, resigned with two years left on her contract.

Baker will stay at least through the end of March, then take on other assignments at the school through June.

Mike Frier, the paralyzed defensive tackle of the Seattle Seahawks, is breathing normally and eating regular food.

The 300-pound lineman is spending four to five hours daily in physical or occupational therapy at the University of Washington Medical Center rehabilitation unit.
