No Panorama Upsets In First-Round Games

The regular season is over, but the Curlew boys are up to their regular habits.

Curt Nelson scored all 13 of his points during a 29-point first quarter Wednesday as the Class B second-ranked Cougars (21-0) opened the Panorama League tournament with an 87-42 win over visiting Springdale (10-11).

Curlew shot 90 percent from the free-throw line and 60 percent from the field. The Cougars held the high-scoring tandem of Brad Coe and Brian Coe to a combined nine points.

Gary Hughes led Curlew with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The tournament moves to Kettle Falls on Saturday. Curlew meets St. George’s for a berth in the tournament championship. Springdale plays Wellpinit in a loser-out game.

St. George’s 73, Wellpinit 51 Jason Ala scored 12 of his 20 in the first half as the Dragons (14-7) topped the visiting Redskins (10-11).

The Dragons built a big edge by using a press.

NWC 66, Inchelium 41 Nate Dunham scored 10 in the first half as the seventh-ranked Crusaders (18-3), the defending state champions, defeated the visiting Hornets (4-16).

NWC built a double-figure lead in the first half by installing its press. Adam Rapelje and Jeremy Whelham had seven rebounds apiece for the Crusaders.

Shawn Christianson led Inchelium with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

NWC meets Republic on Saturday for a berth in the title game. Inchelium and Selkirk play a loser-out game.

Republic 59, Selkirk 51 In the closest game of the night, John Kuchenmeister scored 19 as the Tigers (13-8) defeated the visiting Rangers (11-10).

Selkirk, with 17 turnovers, had eight more than Republic. Selkirk’s Nathan Dial scored 18.
