Silver Gloves Medalist Will Compete At Eagles

Mike Vlahovich Staff Writer

A Silver Gloves National silver medalist will help the Spokane Eagles Boxing Club celebrate its silver anniversary. The Eagles are celebrating 25 years of sponsorship of amateur boxing with a match bout at their lodge at E315 Francis.

The bout begins at 1 p.m. and will feature boxers by invitational only.

Dewey Welliver of the Eagles, who recently finished second at the Silver Gloves Nationals in Kansas City, Mo., is among the featured competitors.

It is open to the public.

Riverside near league titles

Riverside boys and girls basketball teams can continue the school’s Northeast A League championship trend. The boys title will be decided in Friday’s final league game when Riverside hosts Chewelah at 8 p.m.

The Rams clinched a tie for the title with Tuesday’s win at Freeman, getting help from Lakeside, which upset Chewelah.

The Eagles are also assured a playoff berth.

The girls will likely be part of a three-way tie for first place following Riverside’s win over Colfax.

Alana Carlander scored 33 points to force the deadlock with Colfax and Lakeside. If needed, tie-breakers will be played next week.

North Side wrestlers at regionals

North Side high school wrestling teams are well represented in this weekend’s Region IV tournament at Central Valley. The five schools accounted for more than half of the Greater Spokane League’s district finalists and champions.

Leading the way is Mead with four top-seeded wrestlers, 135-pound James Clark, 168-pound Erin Vandagriff, 178-pound Troy Hughes and 190-pounder Justin O’Connor.

In all, the Panthers have seven regional participants, including 129-pound second-seed Lyle Beehrbohm.

Rogers has qualified eight to regionals, five of them finishing third at district. Champions were 108-pound Daryl Groom and 115-pound Mike Knight and runner-up 158-pounder Mark Rinde.

Gonzaga Prep advances seven, including 129-pound winner Steve Steigleder and runners-up Chris Montgomery (101) and Cory Brannon (108).

Shadle Park has five regional entrants, including 135-pound second-seed Rodney Martinez, and North Central has two, district runners-up Eddie Jones (122) and Josh Robertson (141).

Lakeside, Riverside lead way

As expected, Lakeside and Riverside High Schools led Northeast A League qualifiers to the Region IV tournament Friday and Saturday in Chelan.

The Eagles advance 11 of 16 district entrants to the state qualifying tournament, and Riverside sends eight.

Included are top seeds Chad Drury (122), Ben Orth (129) and Nate Bohl of Lakeside, defending state champion Henry Peterson (115), Dan Kruger (158) and Matt Morin (178) of Riverside.

Second seeds are Eagles Chris Padayao (115), Hutch Goodman (141) and Bart Orth (148) and Ram Adrian Bojorques (108).

All four Deer Park entrants to regionals were Northeast district finalists. Included is defending state and district champion Alex Schulz (178) and district runners-up Don Forbes (122), Clint Umbach (122) and Wes Williams (275).

Mead, NC gymnasts to regional

By finishing third and fourth in district, Mead and North Central’s entire gymnastics teams have advanced to this weekend’s regional meet in Pasco. Included was seventhplace all-around finishing freshman Kelly Heron of the Panthers, who was second on balance beam, NC’s Angela Jensen who was sixth on beam, and Lisa Becker, who was eighth on vault.

Shadle Park regional qualifiers are Jenny Bond, sixth on vault, Mary Bass in three events, Melissa Graves in two events, Wendy Haley and Jessica Davis.

Rogers qualifiers are Tish Conto, Cora Gaines and Brandy Shea on beam and Arlene Dawe on vault.
