Man Says Murdered Teacher Kept List Of Sex Victims Accused Murderer Says Teacher Raped Him At 13
A man accused of fatally shooting his former schoolteacher says the teacher kept a list of about 20 students with whom he had sexual contact, according to court records.
Neal Summers, a teacher at Whitman Middle School, was shot to death outside the school in January 1994.
Darrell Allen Cloud, 25, has pleaded innocent by reason of insanity to a charge of first-degree murder. Cloud, who goes on trial Feb. 24, has claimed that Summers raped him when he was 13 and continued a sexual relationship for several years.
Cloud’s attorney, John Henry Browne, on Wednesday asked Superior Court Judge George Mattson to let jurors see documents recovered by police from Summers’ home after his death. Mattson took the matter under consideration.
Among the documents submitted to the court was one, allegedly in Summers’ handwriting, that lists about 20 youths by first names and the first letter of their last names.
“The list was actually shown to Mr. Cloud by Mr. Summers, with Mr. Summers bragging about the number of children he had molested and also enlisting Darrell’s help to get others involved,” Browne said.
Summers gave the youths beer and paid cash for sexual favors, according to the documents.
Also among the documents was a questionnaire Summers allegedly had Cloud fill out when Cloud was 13. The boy was asked to tell Summers how he felt about their sexual activity.
The questionnaire asked, “Am I taking advantage of you?” The handwritten answer: “Sort of. You make me pay for every drop of beer I drink.”
Browne contends Cloud became mentally ill as a result of the ongoing sexual abuse.
King County prosecutors acknowledge Summers initiated a sexual relationship with Cloud. The question is whether the abuse affected Cloud’s state of mind at the time of the shooting, said Senior Deputy Prosecutor Tim Bradshaw.
