Pirates Win On Road, Close In On First Seed

COLLEGE WOMEN

Whitworth (9-2 league, 15-11 overall) moved within one win of clinching the first seed in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges basketball tournament with a 65-57 win over Pacific (4-7, 8-18) in Forest Grove, Ore.

The Pirates capitalized on a 15-7 run in the game’s final 5:20 to overcome a 30-24 halftime deficit.

Whitworth’s Jennifer Tissue led the Pirates down the stretch, scoring four of her eight points and dishing out two assists.

Tissue put Whitworth ahead 56-50 with a breakaway steal and layup with 3:20 remaining.

She grabbed 11 rebounds and Sherri Northington pulled down eight as the Pirates outrebounded the Boxers 46-31. Kim McFadden recorded seven assists to move within 11 of the Whitworth career record.

The Bucs can earn the right to host the conference tournament next Friday and Saturday with a win at Lewis & Clark today.

Oregon 81, WSU 75

Sally Crowe scored 24 points to lead the Ducks (4-8, 13-7 overall) past the Cougars (4-8, 11-10) in Pacific-10 Conference play in Bohler Gym.

Oregon became the first women’s team to win a Pac-10 game at Pullman this season, snapping WSU’s six-game home winning streak. The Cougars had a 4-0 conference mark at home.

The Cougars were led by Kireen Ellis 19 points off the bench. Oregon received doublefigure support from Renae Fegent, who scored 19.

Moneka Staton hit two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Oregon State beat Washington (9-3, 19-6) in Seattle for the first time since 1983.
