Lakeside Boys, Girls Reach Title Games
Northeast A
Lakeside High School doubled up to join Medical Lake and Riverside in the championship games of the Northeast A District basketball tournament at Mead High School.
The Lakeside boys worked overtime Saturday to relegate the Riverside boys to the losers’ bracket with a 79-71 triple-overtime thriller. The Eagles moved on to meet Medical Lake, a 57-54 winner over Chewelah, for the right to represent the NEA as the No. 1 seed at the state tournament.
The Lakeside girls shook off their worst half of basketball to top Chewelah 58-37. The Rams, who held off Colfax 59-55, await the Eagles in the girls’ championship game.

Chevy Matthews nailed four of seven free throws, the last one to the chants of “Chevy! Chevy!” from the Eagle faithful, with less than a minute to play in the third overtime to seal the win for the Eagles.
“It was nothing,” the senior said. “It was just like any other free throw. I just wanted it to go in.”
Matthews was the hero of the first overtime as well, dropping in a fadeaway jumper with a minute left to knot the score at 65.
“He can definitely handle it,” Eagles coach Kevin Mulligan said of Matthews. “He has been a leader of this team all year long. He does an excellent job.”
Riverside’s Keith Cook sent the game into the first overtime when his 3-pointer with just under a minute to play in regulation found nothing but the bottom of the net to tie the game at 59.

Erin Traber and Stephanie Guenther had four points each to key a 10-0 secondhalf run that allowed the Eagles to shake a scrappy Bulldog team.
“I told them we played the worst half of the season and we’re up by four, what does that tell you?” Eagle coach Lisa Schultz said. “We are in the game.”
Leading by only four at halftime, the Eagles responded by making the most of a sloppy opening 2 minutes of the third quarter that featured five fouls and at least a half-dozen turnovers to score some easy baskets. They outscored the Bulldogs 13-1 in the third quarter.
“I told them to concentrate more on offense,” Schultz said. “In the first half we were puting up some shots that I’m not even sure we were even looking at the basket.”
The fouls were not limited to the third quarter. The teams combined to commit 63 fouls.
The Eagles finished 22 of 41 from the foul line, with Guenther leading the way, hitting 7 of 10 to finish with 15 points.
