Pioneers Roar Back, Beat Bucs

In 48 hours, Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy caught the bad guys. In 48 hours this weekend, the Whitworth Pirates men’s basketball team got caught.

On the brink of the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges regular-season championship, the Pirates finished the season in third place. They lost to Lewis & Clark 73-66 Saturday night at Portland.

The Pirates (7-5, 18-9) finish behind the Pioneers (8-4, 14-13) and Willamette (8-4, 16-10).

Lewis & Clark wins the NCIC because it swept the season series from Willamette.

As the third-place seed for the postseason conference tournament, the Pirates will play at Willamette on Wednesday at Salem, Ore.

In Saturday night’s contest, the Pirates held a 40-33 lead at the half. They then extended the lead to 50-39 with 15 minutes left. But after a Lewis & Clark timeout, the Pioneers went on a 21-8 run.

The spurt covered 9 minutes, with Lewis & Clark taking the lead for good, 60-58, after a basket by the NCIC’s leading scorer Dinari Foreman.

“They turned it up,” Whitworth coach Warren Friedrichs said. “They had the crowd going - it was tough.”
