The Hot Seat Our Weekly Look At Who’s In Trouble
Hot Seat CORRECTION Last week, we said George Nethercutt voted to repeal the Davis-Bacon Act. Our point was right but our words were wrong. There hasn’t been a vote yet. What we should have said is: During the campaign, Nethercutt declined to say clearly whether he opposed the Davis-Bacon Act. This week he SPONSORED a bill to repeal it.
A good example of picking a dumb fight
State Sen. Margarita Prentice, A DEMOCRAT, IS ON THE HOT SEAT for wasting the Legislature’s time with her silly bill concerning marriage licenses. She wants to put warning labels on the licenses stating that the laws against physical, sexual and emotional abuse apply to spouses. For the life of us, we can’t imagine some guy at the courthouse buying a marriage license, reading the warning, then changing his mind and saying, “That’s it! If it’s against the law to beat my wife, the wedding’s off!” If Prentice wants to help battered women she should spend her time pushing legislation with the teeth to get tough on domestic violence.
The great golf conspiracy, Part II
Bill Clinton narrowly escaped those Republican golf assassins we warned him about last week. But some spectators weren’t so lucky. For the record, the wily ex-presidential tag team of George Bush and Gerald Ford bagged three spectators, all Democrats. Bob Hope, the other member of the foursome, missed all the spectators but reportedly played well for a man 191 years old.
